Incompetent Cervix

Before pregnancy, your cervix is more rigid and is normally closed. As a pregnancy progresses and delivery gets closer the cervix softens, effaces and dilates. An incompetent cervix occurs when weak cervical tissue causes or contributes to premature birth or even loss of an otherwise healthy pregnancy by opening too soon. It is a difficult condition to diagnose and treat. If the cervix does begin to open, the treatment might include medication, frequent ultrasounds and possibly strong sutures to keep the cervix closed.

Solace Women's Care is a full service obstetric and gynecologic practice servicing The Woodlands and Willis, Texas area and specializing in high risk obstetrics. If you need advice or a check up call us to schedule an appointment. In addition to births, prenatal care and checkups, we offer more specialized care.

Surgery or Trauma to the Cervix

Solace Woman's Care is a practice that looks forward to helping all our patients with any need that may arise. There are many things that can happen to cause damage to the cervix. A bruised or tender cervix can be the result of intercourse. If the man's penis is too large or is inserted to roughly, the cervix can be bruised and can cause pain and discomfort. Pregnancy can also bruise the cervix especially if the baby is active and kicks a lot.

Surgical needs may arise. If you have surgery for early cervical cancer, you will usually need to have a hysterectomy. For a number of women, there may be another option, a radical trachelectomy, which leaves enough of the cervix that it may be possible to become pregnant afterward. This leaves the internal opening of the cervix. When the opening is stitched closed it may be possible to support a pregnancy. This can only be done in the very early stages of cancer (stage 1) and safely can remove all of the cancer.

At Solace Woman's Care, we can discuss and treat cervix disorders, many times leading to a healthy, complete pregnancy. Contact our office today to schedule a consultation.
