Heavy Bleeding

What is an endometrial ablation?

Endometrial ablation is a procedure to surgically destroy or ablate the uterine lining. The surgery is usually performed to help women alleviate pain from heavy menstruation taking a toll on daily life.

How does a Minerva ablation help heavy bleeding?

Dr. Sejour offers the Minerva treatment, which can be performed any time during your menstrual cycle. The three to four-minute treatment is done in-office.

You’re taken to the treatment room and the nurse takes your temperature, blood pressure, and other important information. Your Solace nurse might tape a number of wires to your chest to keep track of how your heart is working, and you might be given some medication to help you with any pain and make you feel more relaxed for your procedure.

When you’re ready for treatment, Dr. Sejour inserts a speculum, a medical tool that gently opens your vagina. He might numb your cervix so you don’t feel pain during the procedure.

Dr. Sejour then dilates your cervix to insert the soft tip of the Minerva device into your uterus. The Minerva controller then delivers energy to heat the inside of your uterus for two minutes. Dr. Sejour then removes the device.

What can I expect during recovery from my Minerva treatment?

You’re taken to a recovery area where you’re monitored for around an hour to ensure there are no complications. You might experience mild to moderate low abdominal cramping and pain. The nurse or Dr. Sejour may give you some medication for relief.

Once you’re given the all-clear, you can return home, but it’s important to plan to have someone take you home due to lingering effects of any medications you were given. Any abdominal pain should subside within a day and you can treat pain at home with over-the-counter medications.
