Obstetrics Q&A

What is obstetrics?

Obstetrics is the medical field focused on caring for women during pregnancy and childbirth. A trained obstetrician like Dr. Sejour provides prenatal, surgical, and general medical care for women during pregnancy and childbirth.

How often should I see my obstetrician during pregnancy?

During your pregnancy, you visit Dr. Sejour for routine prenatal care to monitor the health of you and your growing baby. The initial appointment usually takes place around eight weeks following your last menstrual period.

From that point, you visit Dr. Sejour approximately once a month throughout the duration of your pregnancy and often every two weeks in the final trimester.

What is a high-risk pregnancy?

A high-risk pregnancy is when a mother or baby has a high risk of health complications or have current health complications that could impact the pregnancy. Obstetricians who provide care for women with high-risk pregnancies are highly qualified and undergo extensive training that helps them become adept in dealing with a broad range of complications.

You may have a high-risk pregnancy if you:

  • Have a chronic health condition
  • Are over age 35
  • Are carrying multiple babies
  • Have a history of preterm labor, miscarriage, or cesarean delivery
  • Engage in heavy smoking or alcohol consumption
  • Develop certain complications during pregnancy that may affect you or your baby

A high-risk pregnancy typically requires more frequent medical monitoring, checkups, scans, and tests. In general, your pregnancy is considered high-risk if you have certain pre-existing health conditions, such as:

  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • High blood pressure
  • Epilepsy
  • Kidney disease
  • An infection

There are many complications a woman can endure with pregnancy and childbirth, but with the right medical care from the Solace Women’s Center, rest assured you and your baby are in safe and qualified hands.

Dr. Sejour and the attentive staff members can perform scans and tests to check on a variety of factors, including non-invasive prenatal testing, 3D and 4D ultrasounds, and genetic testing. Genetic testing allows you to determine certain health risks and genes.

It’s important you consume a healthy diet and follow the advice given to you by Dr. Sejour to help you have a healthier pregnancy. Call the friendly Solace Women’s Center team today.
